They've made the little skill I now have on any of those areas. I've watched countless creators on youtube, and since i'm still starting to compose, record, produce, mix and master my own little babies, they have ALL made some difference. I've started learning stuff around 5 months ago. And getting to the point where you *consistently* make good mixes? A few of my students get there within a few years, but for most people, even professionals (myself included), it just takes longer. But teaching someone to sometimes make a good mix takes a year or two. One more, for good measure, in line w/ the above: I can teach parallel compression to anyone, in about 10 minutes.

*understanding how to listen/think differently.* The Venn Diagram overlap of people who are both good mixers *and* good teachers is pretty small. There's a difference between *explaining techniques* vs. People who can really teach this stuff might not be cheap. There are a few people who are true autodidacts, and a few others who'll just stumble on a good workflow, but most will do better with a mentor/tutor to guide them (along with doing a lot of actual work, of course). They go hand in hand, you can't just study. Learning this stuff is a long term process It's just my observation that people who are getting into production now do not have really basic skillsets underneath them and that's hurting them in the long run.

I am not trying to patronize you or say that you haven't already or don't want to. If you've already done some of this, I apologize. That will come in time sooner and with more care and originality because you've got the fundamentals lodged in your skull. It's not going to be as fun because you're not going to be immediately getting the results you seek. Keep testing boundaries and thinking 'i wonder if.' and 'what's this do?' Then a hopefully 'not as crappy as the first two tracks' track.

Learn how to build a synth patch from scratch, how to modulate it, how to automate it, etc. You aren't learning how to play concert tympani, but knowing the difference between a half note and a eight note triplet is important. Make sure you know things like time signatures and subdivisions. Then you can get into some of the fun stuff like keying and automation.Д«egin with very basic exercises, some of which you should ultimately be defining yourself. do - and more importantly HOW they do it. Learn all the basic effects - what modulation, delay, reverb, compression, eq, etc. Read up on legacy drum machines that inform today's music - things are still very based fundamentally on decades-old machines like the 909, 808, etc. It sounds like you are most interested in beat and track production, so dig up some synthesis basics (I'm talking the barebones stuff - VCA's, LFO's, ADSR, VCF's - anything that looks like a bed set of Scrabble tiles.

Final test - unplug your mouse and do it all with hotkeys. No buying mix templates, that's still step one. Learn your DAW, it's functions, hotkeys, mixer, channel strip and included effects. Yes, there is a world of tutorials, how-to's, videos and websites that provide the information you seek - but you're going to ultimately have to learn your own way. It's unfortunate, but take the knock and move on to step two here. One - Others have paid far more to learn that lesson.
